BREAKING: Top MAGA Republican Detained at Airport
A prominent Republican lawmaker issued an apology after an airport incident where he was “briefly” detained by police, attributing the event to feeling “disoriented.”
Texas Representative Michael McCaul revealed he had taken an “ambien” along with some “alcohol,” which left him in a confused state at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C.
“Two weekends ago, I made a mistake — one for which I take full responsibility,” stated McCaul, who chairs the influential House Foreign Affairs Committee, in his comments to DailyMail.com.
“I missed a flight to Texas and became disoriented in the airport. This was the result of a poor decision to mix an Ambien — taken to sleep on my upcoming flight — with alcohol. Law enforcement officers briefly detained me while I waited for a family member to pick me up,” he explained.
According to a spokesperson, McCaul takes the medication due to being a “nervous flier.” As the chairman, he frequently travels to engage with global leaders both domestically and abroad.
McCaul was set to board a flight back to Texas, where he resides with his wife Linda and their five children, but became disoriented and missed the flight. Reports indicated he had also locked himself out of his phone during the incident.
Police intervened when McCaul became confused and missed his flight, later confirming he was charged with “drunk in public” around 9 p.m. on November 4, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police.
The incident took place just one day before McCaul’s election win. In his statement, he expressed hope that the experience would help him improve personally. “I have nothing but respect and gratitude for the officers who assisted me that evening,” he told DailyMail.com.
“This incident does not reflect who I am or who I strive to be. As a human, I am not perfect. But I am determined to learn from this mistake and, God willing, make myself a better person,” he added.
Recently, McCaul has made trips to India and Taiwan to bolster diplomatic relations with the U.S. While his role as Foreign Affairs Committee chair is term-limited, he could potentially extend it through a waiver from House leadership.
On Wednesday, House Republicans held leadership elections, reelecting Mike Johnson (R-La.) as Speaker unanimously.
Johnson will still require further support from his members in a full House vote set for January 3, 2025. Some conservative Republicans continue to have reservations about his leadership for the next Congress.
The current GOP House leadership, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, retained their roles following the Republican vote, as reported by DailyMail.com.
Johnson’s success came after a morning gathering with President-elect Donald Trump and other lawmakers at the Hyatt Hotel, where Trump later met with President Joe Biden at the White House, pledging full backing for Johnson. “This is a tremendous guy. I’m with him all the way,” Trump remarked.
In related news, Johnson shared that Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz has resigned effective immediately, following Trump’s announcement that he would nominate Gaetz as his attorney general.
“Out of deference to us, he submitted his resignation letter effective immediately from Congress. That did catch us by surprise,” Johnson said. “When I asked about it, he explained, ‘Well, you can’t have too many absences.’ Under Florida State law, there’s an eight-week timeline for filling a vacancy,” he elaborated.
“By acting now, I’ve already contacted Governor DeSantis in Florida to start the clock. He’s currently in Italy, and we’ll talk first thing in the morning. If we start the process now, we may have that seat filled by January 3rd when we take the new oath of office for the next Congress,” Johnson concluded.
