CBS Poll: Overwhelming Support For Trump Following Joint Address

Democratic lawmakers may have bristled at President Donald Trump’s triumphant return to the Capitol, but polling suggests their constituents felt differently.

According to a CBS News/YouGov poll taken immediately after Trump delivered his joint address to Congress, the response from Americans who tuned in was overwhelmingly positive — a result sure to please a president who closely tracks public opinion.

The survey revealed that an impressive 76 percent of viewers approved of Trump’s remarks, while only 23 percent — less than one-fourth — expressed disapproval.

When asked to describe the speech, 68 percent of those watching said it was “hopeful.” In addition, many described it using terms like “presidential,” “inspiring,” “unifying,” and “entertaining.”

A strong majority of Americans who watched President Trump’s address felt he highlighted topics that are important to their daily lives, the CBS News/YouGov poll indicated.

More than two-thirds of viewers believe Trump has a clear plan to address inflation — a problem that began under President Joe Biden. Furthermore, more than 75 percent of those surveyed expressed support for Trump’s ideas on reducing government waste, immigration, and border security. Despite the overwhelmingly negative media coverage leading up to the address, nearly one-quarter of viewers approved of Trump’s handling of issues related to Ukraine and Russia, according to Breitbart News, which reported on the poll.

Although audiences for these types of speeches often skew toward the president’s own party, the survey found that only 51 percent of viewers identified as Republicans. This suggests that Trump’s message connected with a much broader audience than just his core supporters.

In a moment that resonated strongly with viewers, over three-quarters approved of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) when he directed the Sergeant at Arms to remove Rep. Al Green (D-TX) after Green repeatedly disrupted Trump’s speech despite multiple warnings.

Trump’s address also earned praise from both Republican leaders and various media personalities.

“Tonight, President Trump made his triumphant return to Congress to share his bold, optimistic vision for renewing the American Dream,” Speaker Johnson posted on X.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) weighed in as well, saying: “This is the fifth State of the Union address I’ve seen Trump give — it was by far his best.”

Fox News anchor Bret Baier highlighted a touching moment during the speech, remarking: “The best moment — emotional moment, was DJ, who’s battling cancer. He wanted to be a police officer and during the speech, the president said the Secret Service has made him an agent.” The young cancer survivor, recognized by Trump during his remarks, left a lasting impression on viewers.

Fox’s Brit Hume also offered strong praise, stating: “If you ever doubted that Donald Trump is the political colossus of our time and our nation, this night and this speech should have put that to rest.”

Even former Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera weighed in, calling Trump’s performance “strong, defiant and entertaining.”

Former CNN analyst Chris Cillizza added his own assessment: “That was a very effective speech. You can hate it or him. But that speech was aimed squarely at issues where the public is with Trump — and filled with made-for-sharing moments. A master image-maker at work (and you can hate him and acknowledge that’s true!).”

The positive reactions didn’t stop there. Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimming champion and advocate for women’s sports, shared her thoughts online: “I am just left feeling inspired and hopeful and there’s so much to look forward to.”

Finally, Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle summed up the night’s impact, saying: “This speech is one of Trump’s best ever, and the Democrat behavior during it has been not only despicable but also colossally politically stupid. Whoever is advising these idiots just steered their party into an even deeper ditch than Joe Biden and Kamala Harris left them in.”

A Pennsylvania voter, speaking to the press after the address, offered a personal take: “I thought it was very positive… We used to be a country that would just let everything happen… I think now, we’re taking back things that should’ve never been given away. So, I think doing those tariffs… it’s well overdue.”
