CNN Conservative Scott Jennings Lands Gig At Major Daily Newspaper
Los Angeles Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is reshaping his editorial board in response to ongoing challenges faced by legacy media.
Historically, newspapers have leaned liberal, with editorial boards consistently endorsing only Democratic presidential candidates—a trend that has arguably contributed to diminishing relevance. However, Dr. Soon-Shiong has taken a step toward diversifying perspectives by welcoming a new conservative voice, CNN commentator Scott Jennings, to The Times’ editorial board.
Unlike many so-called “Republicans” often hired by legacy media who openly criticize President-elect Donald Trump, Jennings is a well-known supporter of the former president.
“It’s true—I’ve accepted Dr. Soon-Shiong’s invitation to join the editorial board of the Los Angeles Times,” Jennings shared on X. “I’ve written columns for the paper over the last few years and was honored to do so under such a storied and important masthead. I love newspapers and believe in strong journalism and strong opinion pages that represent a wide array of views.”
Jennings emphasized his goal to give a voice to Americans who feel overlooked or even dismissed by mainstream media. “I plan to represent those Americans who believe they are often ignored or even ridiculed in legacy media and applaud Dr. Soon-Shiong’s move to bring balance to the editorial board,” he continued.
He reassured that his other professional commitments would remain unaffected by this new role.
On November 26, Dr. Soon-Shiong announced his intention to add Jennings to the board, underscoring his commitment to fostering balanced perspectives.
“That’s why I want Scott on our new editorial board!!! Growing the board with experts who have thoughtful balanced views and new candidates are accepting the challenge to join us! Way to go Scott and thanks for accepting @latimes @ScottJenningsKY Stay tuned we are making this happen,” Dr. Soon-Shiong stated.
Recently, Jennings expressed approval of Trump’s latest Cabinet-level nominees during a CNN panel discussion, particularly regarding the surprising nomination of former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general.
“Are you not entertained?” Jennings remarked when asked about the pick by CNN “News Central” co-host Boris Sanchez.
“This is the most entertaining transition I’ve ever seen,” he continued. “I was as surprised as Paula, because it’s not a name that we had seen.” Jennings noted that initial reports suggested other candidates, including prominent Washington legal experts, were being considered. “What I take away from this is that this is a president-elect who is feeling his power,” he added.
With years of experience in journalism and a history of public service, including roles in President George W. Bush’s administration and campaigns, Jennings provided further insights. He highlighted Trump’s approach as one that challenges conventional Washington norms, citing the appointment of Fox News host and U.S. Army veteran Pete Hegseth as another example.
“He’s here to do what he wants to do. And he’s going to expect the Republicans to fall in line,” Jennings said. He acknowledged that nominees like Gaetz and Hegseth must still undergo confirmation hearings and prove themselves.
“It is apparent to me that Trump is in a decisive mood and is not someone who’s interested in picking things that he would consider to be watered down,” Jennings observed. “So that’s my initial reaction to this. I mean, we truly learned about it two seconds before we came on here. So pretty wild day.”
Adding to the surprises, Trump’s selection of former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as the next Director of National Intelligence has also shaken Washington expectations.
