Democratic DC Lawmaker Detained by FBI

A Democratic member of Washington D.C.'s City Council was apprehended on Sunday.

Trayon White Sr. was reportedly taken into custody by the FBI, as noted by The Washington Post.

Details surrounding the council member's arrest, who is on track for a third-term win in November, have not yet been disclosed.

D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson addressed the situation in a statement shared by WTOP-TV.

"Maintaining public trust and the integrity of our elected officials is of utmost importance," the statement read. "We are currently working to gather all the relevant facts."

Speaking to WTTG-TV, Mendelson expressed his own uncertainty regarding the reasons behind White's detention.

"I'm eager to learn more to understand the circumstances," he remarked. "At this point, you know as much as I do."

Frederick Cooke Jr., White’s attorney, informed the Post that he had not yet communicated with his client.

"I'm attempting to contact him, so I can discuss our next steps," Cooke stated.

Earlier this year, White faced a $40,000 fine from the District of Columbia's campaign finance office related to two previous campaigns—his 2020 re-election bid for the council and a 2022 mayoral campaign.

The office claimed White failed to provide documentation to clarify inconsistencies in his campaign spending and contributions.

These issues were still unresolved at the time of White's arrest.

The Post further reported that by around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Mike Stock, a resident of the same apartment building as White, observed FBI agents entering the building equipped with battering rams. Approximately 10 agents were involved in the operation.

In 2018, White sparked controversy when he suggested that the weather was being manipulated by Jewish people, according to Fox News.

In a since-removed video, White referenced "climate manipulation."

"And D.C. keeps talking about, 'We’re a resilient city.' And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man," White said. "Be careful."
