'Dems' Hopes and Dreams Crushed with One Word' as Pete Hegseth's FBI Background Check Reaches the Senate

Senate Democrats and establishment Republicans are grasping at any opportunity to obstruct President-elect Donald Trump’s America-first vision.

Ironically, their initial attempt at undermining his plans seems to be falling flat, even without assistance from the notoriously controversial FBI.

According to Punchbowl News, leading members of the Senate Armed Services Committee received Pete Hegseth’s FBI background check late last week. Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for Defense secretary, is under scrutiny, but the contents of the report apparently failed to raise eyebrows. One social media user on X confidently proclaimed, “Dems’ hopes and dreams crushed with one word.”

That word, as highlighted in the post, was “unremarkable.”

Hegseth’s Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Trump’s choice of Hegseth raised eyebrows when announced in November, exciting supporters eager for a second administration that breaks from Washington’s entrenched “business-as-usual” politics. Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News personality, embodies a stark contrast to the Pentagon’s entrenched bureaucracy.

Naturally, Senate Democrats and establishment Republicans are expected to challenge all of Trump’s nontraditional Cabinet picks. Tuesday’s hearing will provide insight into how far Swamp-aligned senators are willing to go in resisting his nominees.

At the very least, these senators have already succeeded in creating narratives for their allies in the establishment media.

As Punchbowl News reported, Hegseth “has faced allegations of sexual and financial misconduct, as well as doubt over his qualifications for the role.”

Yet critics of Hegseth may find themselves disappointed, as an “unremarkable” background check from an FBI often accused of being aligned with the Swamp speaks volumes.

So far, only Republican Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking member, have reviewed the report. Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois told reporters on Friday that other committee members are unlikely to have access to the file before the hearing, according to Punchbowl News.

Nonetheless, many X users interpreted the “unremarkable” report as a significant blow to Hegseth’s critics.

Still, Trump supporters remain skeptical of anything coming from the FBI.

This, however, makes Hegseth’s background check all the more satisfying. It signals that even Democrats and establishment Republicans cannot depend on their usual allies at the FBI for damaging accusations. They will need to find another strategy to oppose Trump’s nominee.
