Did KJP Forget When 9/11 Happened? Biden’s Press Secretary Gets Date Wrong, and the Internet Reacts

As the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre is tasked with making news.

However, in the case of the woman commonly referred to as "KJP," it often becomes the wrong kind of news—whether it's covering for a visibly confused President Joe Biden or making questionable claims about former President Donald Trump.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Jean-Pierre made the kind of avoidable mistake that quickly spread across social media—highlighting just how poorly she sometimes handles the job.

This time, it appeared she forgot the actual date of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The moment occurred about halfway through the briefing, when she was asked a question about Trump’s ties to far-right activist Laura Loomer, as well as comments Loomer made in a social media post on Sunday regarding Vice President Kamala Harris.

(Loomer had claimed that if Harris were to win in November, the White House would “smell like curry” and that speeches would be “facilitated via a call center.”)

The attempt at humor fell flat (although the "call center" comment might have landed better). But CBS News reporter Weijia Jiang’s question was even worse—it was such an easy one that it seemed like it could have been orchestrated (if it wasn’t). It gave Jean-Pierre the perfect opportunity to attack Trump and his base as racist conspiracy theorists.

Jean-Pierre then dove into a mini-lecture, referencing a social media post Loomer had shared last year that bizarrely blamed the 2001 attacks on then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But here’s where KJP made her big blunder.

"Many of us have personal stories of that day—9/11 of 2021," she said.

She was off by 20 years, and social media users wasted no time in expressing their mockery and disbelief. Here are just a few examples:

No one in their right mind would think KJP genuinely believes 9/11 took place in 2021. It was clearly a slip of the tongue—and one she didn’t repeat when mentioning the date again later in the briefing.

What’s likely is that after two years of repeating Democratic talking points about Trump—mechanically and repetitively—Jean-Pierre's mouth seems to run without engaging her brain. For Democrats, attacking Trump over the January 6, 2021 Capitol incident comes as naturally as breathing.

So, while it was just a slip, it also revealed more than that. It showed how automatic—and hollow—the White House’s criticisms of Trump have become. Jean-Pierre probably doesn’t even believe half of what she’s saying, any more than the media believes her when she says it.

Ultimately, what matters to Jean-Pierre and the mainstream media is that whatever’s said casts Trump in a negative light.

But in this instance, much like on other occasions, Jean-Pierre only managed to embarrass herself—yet again.
