DNC Lays Off Hundreds of Employees in ‘Betrayal’ After Trump Victory
The challenges for the Democratic Party continue to pile up following Vice President Kamala Harris’ unprecedented defeat to now-President-elect Donald Trump.
In the wake of the November 5 election, where the Democratic campaign poured over $1 billion into the race but still came up short, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) dismissed hundreds of staff members, according to a report from the left-leaning publication Mother Jones.
The layoffs have caused significant upheaval, with the union representing DNC staff launching a GoFundMe campaign to assist workers who were abruptly let go. The campaign has sparked outrage among remaining staff, with some describing the cuts as a “betrayal” of the party’s core values, as noted by Fox News.
The DNC union’s fundraising effort seeks to collect $25,000 to support employees affected by the layoffs that followed the party’s loss in the 2024 election.
According to the union’s page, the layoffs impacted approximately two-thirds of the DNC workforce. Many staffers were reportedly given little to no advance notice and received “no severance.” The suddenness of the decision has drawn sharp criticism within the organization.
In a public statement, the union lambasted the DNC’s leadership, calling the layoffs both “callous” and “short-sighted.” The statement also revealed that some employees who had been reassured about job security post-election were included in the cuts.
“We are heartbroken to see our colleagues – who dedicated countless hours to electing Democrats up and down the ballot – depart under these circumstances, and we are furious with DNC leadership for failing to provide severance to those affected,” DNC staff union organizer Jill Brownfield stated on the GoFundMe page.
A DNC spokesperson responded to the criticism in a statement to Fox News Digital, explaining, “Every cycle, political organizations scale up to meet the demands, and as the cycle comes to a close, it’s a tough reality of our industry that we must part with talented, hardworking staff.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the DNC adhered to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiated with the union.
“While the DNC has met the terms of the union agreement negotiated by the CBA, we share the entire DNC family’s frustration and continue to provide resources to all members of the team to support them in this transition,” the statement added.
Union officials clarified that funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign would “directly aid” staff members impacted by the layoffs, including single parents and those expecting children. The proceeds will be distributed equally to all laid-off employees who opt to receive the funds.
“We hope these funds can soften the economic blow for those impacted,” the campaign’s description read.
The fundraising effort was launched less than a week after the DNC announced the sweeping layoffs on a Wednesday night. The decision has drawn harsh criticism from both current staff and union members.
“The DNC’s senior leadership has chosen to leave loyal staff scrambling to cover rent, medical expenses, and childcare costs,” the union’s statement asserted.
The union further urged Democratic Party leaders to provide severance packages for all permanent employees affected by the layoffs and to engage with remaining staff in a transparent and honest manner about the party’s future direction.
Prominent Democratic strategist James Carville recently issued a dire warning, emphasizing the damage to the party’s reputation following the extravagant spending during the unsuccessful 2024 campaign.
Reports reveal that Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, alongside the Democratic Party, spent close to $1.5 billion during her brief presidential bid, which began on July 21. Speaking on his Politics War Room podcast, Carville expressed concerns about future fundraising challenges and called for a comprehensive audit to rebuild trust and ensure accountability for the campaign’s finances.
“The resistance is going to have trouble raising money. These fundraisers are burnt,” Carville stated. “They’re really pissed now, and the damage that the 2024 campaign has done — the damage that this decade has done to the Democratic brand — is almost unfathomable. Almost unfathomable.”
