Family Reveals Richard Simmons' Cause of Death Following Coroner's Report

The death of former fitness icon Richard Simmons has been determined to be accidental, according to a family announcement made on Wednesday.

Tom Estey, the family’s spokesperson, shared a statement with People, saying, “This morning, Richard Simmons' brother, Lenny, was contacted by the L.A. Coroner’s office.”

“The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s passing was accidental, resulting from complications related to recent falls, with heart disease also being a contributing factor,” the statement continued.

Estey also mentioned that the toxicology report indicated that only prescribed medication was present in Simmons’ system.

The statement concluded, “The Family wishes to express their gratitude for the overwhelming love and support received during this time of profound loss.”

Simmons was found deceased at his residence on July 13.

According to TMZ, Simmons had experienced a fall in his bathroom the night before — on his 76th birthday — but had declined to seek medical attention at that time.

The following morning, a housekeeper discovered him and immediately called emergency responders, but Simmons was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

“Richard rose to fame after founding The Anatomy Asylum, which later became Slimmons, and producing a series of fitness tapes and DVDs, such as ‘Sweatin’ to the Oldies,’ ‘Party Off the Pounds,’ and ‘Blast Off,’” reported TMZ.

Simmons made countless television appearances, often playing himself, including a 72-episode role on “General Hospital.”

Los Angeles TV station KNBC commented, “With his vibrant personality, unwavering positivity, and seemingly endless energy, Simmons was a staple of 1980s television health and fitness, although he had not appeared publicly in about a decade.”

At one time, rumors circulated that his housekeeper was holding him against his will, the station reported.

Just two days before his death, Simmons gave what would be his final interview to People, where he was quoted as saying, “I feel good! I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day.”

He added, “I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”

His last social media post expressed his appreciation for the birthday wishes from fans.

“Thank you … I’ve never received so many messages about my birthday in my life!” he wrote.

“I’m sitting here replying to emails. Have a beautiful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard.”
