Gutfeld Rips Media For Report That Trump Said Fox Wrote Jokes For Him

Popular Fox News personality and nighttime host Greg Gutfeld mocked the ‘mainstream’ media for their coverage of former President Donald Trump’s remarks about “some people” at the network contributing jokes for him ahead of the Al Smith charity dinner last week.

Trump attended the annual event last Thursday, a tradition where the two major party candidates exchange light-hearted jabs at each other and other prominent figures. Vice President Kamala Harris notably chose not to attend, becoming the first candidate to skip the dinner since Democrat Walter Mondale in 1984.

During the event, Trump delivered a series of jokes, taking aim at figures such as Harris, Sen. Chuck Schumer, former President Barack Obama, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, among others.

The following day, during an appearance on Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy asked Trump about the source of his jokes.

"Your material was really funny, who wrote it?" Doocy asked.

"Well, I had a lot of help from different people, a lot of people," Trump replied. "A couple of folks from Fox, actually. I probably shouldn't say that, but they wrote some jokes. Most of them I didn’t even like," he added with a laugh.

Several media outlets quickly ran with the story of Trump’s claim, but Fox News soon issued a statement denying the involvement of any of its employees or freelancers: “FOX News confirmed that no employee or freelancer wrote the jokes.”

On The Five later that day, Gutfeld took aim at the media for reporting Trump’s comments without first verifying them with the network.

“The funniest part was the meltdown over the speech,” Gutfeld said. “Trump mentioned someone at Fox helped write his jokes. It wasn’t true. It was a comedian who sends me riffs for my monologue. And these left-wing, social-media shut-ins thought they had uncovered a Watergate-style scandal.”

Gutfeld continued, “Their entire careers revolve around dissecting moments from other people’s actual lives. While we’re having fun, they’re freaking out. At some point, you need to reflect on your life if your happiness is based on what you think other people have done.”

At the dinner itself, Trump saved some of his harshest barbs for former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“After roasting Mayor Eric Adams, I should mention we have another former NYC mayor here tonight,” Trump quipped. “Honestly, the worst in our history—and no, I’m not talking about Michael (Bloomberg). I’m actually shocked Bill de Blasio showed up. He was a terrible mayor. I don’t care if this is a roast or not—that’s just a fact.”

Trump didn’t hold back, continuing, “But at least Bill doesn’t have to worry about the criminals in the city. They owe him a lot. He let them get away with so much.”

Trump then turned his attention to other Democrats. He began his remarks with a jab at himself and the legal challenges he faces: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be here tonight. And these days, it’s a pleasure to be anywhere in New York without having to respond to a subpoena,” he joked, referencing his cases with New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

He criticized Vice President Harris for sending a video message instead of attending in person, calling it “very disrespectful” to the Catholic community and issuing a warning tied to history.

“The last Democrat to skip this event was Walter Mondale, and it didn’t go well for him. He lost 49 states and only won Minnesota,” Trump noted before taking another shot at Harris.

“If you’d really wanted her to show up, you should’ve said the money was going to bail out looters and rioters in Minneapolis. She would’ve been here in a heartbeat.”

Trump closed out his jabs by criticizing the current administration: “We have someone in the White House right now who can barely string together two coherent sentences, someone who has the mental faculties of a child. It’s sad. There’s absolutely nothing there, no intelligence at all. But enough about Kamala Harris.”
