Strange but True: The Shocking Letter Found in OJ Simpson's Bible and Why Kim Kardashian Will Pay Thousands to Get It

Here’s a throwback to a moment from history, albeit a controversial one—a reminder of when the name “Kardashian” first surfaced in connection to the infamous O.J. Simpson case.

As reported by People magazine, Kim Kardashian is now interested in purchasing a Bible that Robert Kardashian Sr. gifted to Simpson shortly after the former NFL star was arrested on allegations of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and waiter Ronald Goldman.

The Bible, presented to Simpson with a personal note dated June 18, 1994, includes a heartfelt message from Kardashian Sr., who had been a close friend of Simpson’s.

“O.J., this book will help,” the elder Kardashian wrote.

“God loves and he will speak to you with his words. Read this book every day. God has a definite plan for your life. You are his child and he will use you again. I love you and God loves you.”

Kim Kardashian is reportedly eager to own this particular piece of her family’s past. However, Simpson’s estate has rejected her $15,000 offer, as the Bible is currently set to be auctioned off to help settle the late athlete’s financial obligations.

“The amount is why I had no choice, because why would I spend $15,000 of estate money — why would I spend $15,000 in attorney’s fees — to sell it to Kim for $15,000?” said Malcolm LaVergne, the lawyer handling Simpson’s estate.

“That’s a zero-sum game. That’s a bad business model. If Kim had offered $150,000 for it, we would’ve been in court getting this approved outside of the auction.”

As of People’s March 14 report, the item was still up for auction, with bids coming in below Kardashian’s original offer at $9,800.

“She may even get it cheaper than the 15 grand, so who knows,” LaVergne noted.

It remains unclear whether the estate’s decision was driven by hopes that the Bible would fetch a higher bid or by concerns about the costs involved in removing it from auction. Kardashian has remained tight-lipped on the matter; when reached by Page Six, her representatives declined to comment on her interest in the item.

Robert Kardashian Sr., a Los Angeles businessman who had gained wealth in the entertainment industry, first rose to public prominence after reading what appeared to be Simpson’s suicide note on June 17, 1994—the day Simpson famously fled from police in a white Bronco, leading to a slow-speed chase broadcast nationwide.

Despite not having practiced law for years, Kardashian joined Simpson’s defense team, known as the “Dream Team,” which included high-profile attorneys like Johnnie Cochran and F. Lee Bailey. His role likely had as much to do with his presence at Simpson’s house following the murders—where he was seen leaving with a garment bag—as with his legal expertise. Due to attorney-client privilege, Kardashian could not be compelled to testify about what was in the bag.

Although Simpson was acquitted during the criminal trial, he was later found liable in a civil case. By the time of his death in April 2024, he had paid little toward the substantial damages awarded in the civil judgment. Kardashian Sr. passed away in 2003 from esophageal cancer at the age of 59.

In a 1996 interview with Barbara Walters, Kardashian expressed doubts about Simpson’s innocence, citing DNA evidence as the most troubling aspect of the case.

“The blood evidence is the biggest thorn in my side; that causes me the greatest problems. So I struggle with the blood evidence,” he admitted to Walters.

“He stood by O.J. irrespective of how he felt because he felt that nobody else was standing by O.J., not because of his innocence or guilt, but because there was a friendship there,” explained Larry Schiller, author of American Tragedy, a book centered on the Simpson trial.

Regardless of how the Bible sale plays out — and whether or not Kim Kardashian ultimately acquires it — it’s yet another reminder that when O.J. Simpson is involved, reality often proves to be stranger and more unsettling than fiction. One can’t help but wonder how things might have turned out if Simpson had truly heeded Robert Kardashian Sr.’s advice — advice that, based on everything that followed, he clearly did not.
