JD Vance Impresses by Doing What Tim Walz Can't in Comedy Podcast Appearance
If you're curious why the whole “weird” label hasn’t stuck with J.D. Vance, just check out his recent appearance on comedian Theo Von’s podcast.
Theo Von — full name Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski III, which certainly justifies the stage name — is a comedian, reality TV personality, and a man of the people.
Vance’s interview followed Donald Trump, who appeared on Von’s show earlier this year. Meanwhile, the Democratic ticket, as you might have guessed, hasn’t been featured. (Though it's worth mentioning that Theo Von is open to interviewing left-leaning figures, as seen when Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared on the show.)
During the two-hour conversation, which covered everything from sports to Theo Von’s recovery journey, the Ohio senator showed he could roll with the punches, laugh heartily, and share personal insights.
A nearly four-minute highlight reel from the two-hour episode — definitely not safe for work but still hilarious — quickly made its rounds on social media after the episode aired. And yes, it’s just as great as you'd expect.
In the first clip, Theo Von and Vance discussed their mutual experiences at Narcotics Anonymous meetings — Von as an addict, Vance as someone supporting his mother. They touched on the serious dangers of relapse, particularly in the fentanyl era.
“You know, that’s sad to say, but that keeps me out, the risk of it,” Theo Von remarked. “I mean this is ridiculous to say … you know, you can’t even do cocaine in this country.”
That had Vance in stitches. “I’m going to steal that line after the election,” he joked.
WARNING: The following videos contain vulgar language that some viewers will find offensive.
Other moments that had them cracking up included a story about an NA meeting where someone was trying to sell a boat, and another where a guy showed up to an AA meeting with a “fish hook stuck in his freaking cheek.”
“But he had two weeks clean,” Theo Von pointed out.
“Yeah, he’d either had a really bad night or a really good night,” Vance joked in response.
“It’s like, alright, man, catch and release, brother, catch and release. He probably tried to cross the border,” Von quipped, causing Vance to burst into laughter.
There was also a memorable laugh-out-loud moment about Charley Hull — the British golfer who smokes cigarettes, and whom Theo Von dubbed “Puffer McGavin” (in reference to Shooter McGavin from "Happy Gilmore") and “the hot John Daly.”
These are just a few highlights, but if you’ve got two hours to spare, the entire podcast is worth checking out.
One of the most striking observations about Vance came from a comment on YouTube: “This guy is supposed to be weird? He’s like the most normal down-to-earth guy.”
This plays right into what Democrats have tried to push about Vance and Trump’s supporters: that they’re “weird.” The term originated with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who ended up running alongside Kamala Harris for Vice President. Ironically, Walz himself comes across as an awkward guy who seems to only find his own jokes amusing — and even those are cringe-worthy.
But this is what real, everyday America looks like. And it unnerves the Democrats. That fact alone tells you everything you need to know.
