Jill Biden Confirms Melania Trump Declined Her White House Invitation

First Lady Jill Biden shared her thoughts in what may be her final interview before she and President Joe Biden leave the White House on January 20. Among the topics she discussed were her predecessor and successor, Melania Trump.

In an interview with The Washington Post, conducted weeks earlier but published recently, Jill Biden revealed that she had invited Melania Trump for tea, but the former and future first lady declined.

“Joe and I respect our institutions, our traditions,” Jill Biden said. “And it’s very important to me that they continue and we —” she hesitated before adding resignedly, “What would be the point of nastiness?”

She mentioned leaving a note for Melania Trump, which she gave to President-elect Donald Trump during the opening of Notre Dame Cathedral in France.

“I congratulated her and I offered help,” Jill Biden recalled.

The president-elect responded, “I had a good meeting with your husband in the Oval Office.”

Jill Biden replied, “Yes, because you’re both talkers.”

The first lady also commented on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“Let’s just say I was disappointed with how it unfolded,” she said regarding reports that Pelosi had pushed for Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid.

When pressed on the matter, Jill Biden said, “I don’t know. I learned a lot about human nature.” When asked to elaborate, she added, “I think that’s all I’m going to say.”

The reporter pressed further, referencing Pelosi’s comment about President Biden’s decision to stay in the race: “It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,” after Biden had already declared his candidacy.

Jill Biden responded, “Like I said, I’ve been thinking a lot about relationships.” She paused before continuing in what the reporter described as her “teacher’s voice.”

“We were friends for 50 years,” she said. “It was disappointing.”

This disappointment may explain Jill Biden’s apparent happiness during Donald Trump’s visit to the White House and their cordial interaction at the Notre Dame Cathedral ceremony last month.

Trump described his private conversation with Jill Biden at the cathedral as positive, despite their history of contentious remarks during election cycles.

“Very nice. She couldn’t have been nicer,” Trump said of their talk.

“It’s politics. You have to get used to it,” he remarked, adding, “She was very nice, and we had a very nice conversation.”

Trump also provided insights from his meetings with global leaders during his first international trip since securing a second term, including a trilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“He wants to make peace,” Trump said of Zelensky in a phone interview with the New York Post. “That’s new.”

“He wants to have a ceasefire,” Trump added. “He wants to make peace. We didn’t talk about the details. He thinks it’s time, and Putin should think it’s time because he’s lost — when you lose 700,000 people, it’s time. It’s not going to end until there’s a peace.”

Trump stated that he and Zelensky discussed ending the war that began in February 2022. “I’m formulating a concept of how to end that ridiculous war,” Trump said.
