Johnson Says New ‘Golden Age’ Is Coming With Trump
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, reelected to the position after a contentious vote, has made an announcement sure to please President-elect Donald Trump.
The Louisiana Republican joined Newsmax’s “Finnerty” show, where he discussed the vote to secure his position, ongoing issues in New Orleans, and the GOP’s plans to advance the president-elect’s agenda.
“We’re ready,” Johnson stated. “Look, I think we’re going to get this done. Everybody here in the House Republican Conference understands the necessity of the moment, the urgency of the hour. They know we don’t have time for games and palace intrigue. We’ve got a lot of very important work to do. We have to deliver on the America First agenda.”
Johnson emphasized the mandate provided by the election results. “We got a mandate in the election. President Trump got 77 million votes, and House Republicans almost 75 million. That was a record for us. And that’s a message that we’ve got to stick together. And if we stay unified, no matter how small our margin—and it will be probably the smallest in U.S. history for a short period—we’ve got to get this done, and I think we will.”
Johnson acknowledged his frustration over compromises with Democrats to pass legislation in the previous term, blaming the Republican Party’s razor-thin majority for the necessity of concessions.
“Everybody is frustrated, as am I, of what we had to do for the last two years. We only had control, very narrow control of one-half of one-third of the federal government,” he said. “Remembering that liberal progressive Democrats were in charge of the White House and the Senate, so we didn’t get everything we wanted, or thought was necessary. But that’s what happens in divided government.”
Looking ahead, Johnson expressed optimism. “Now, however, we’re starting the new year with a new majority, unified government. We have the White House, the Senate, and the House. And so it’s on us. We’re in a lawmaking phase now. We’ve got to stick together and advance this agenda. So I think we will. Everybody understands the necessity of that and the promise of what really can be the new golden age in America.”
WATCH:
President-elect Donald Trump had previously given Johnson his “complete and total endorsement” for the speakership, signaling confidence in his ability to deliver on their shared agenda.
Johnson faced challenges in securing the necessary votes, as Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) voiced opposition to his reelection. This put Johnson in a precarious position, with little room to lose further support.
Despite the opposition, Trump reinforced his endorsement on Truth Social: “Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”
The former president also highlighted the GOP’s triumphs in the 2024 elections. “We are the Party of COMMON SENSE, a primary reason that we WON, in a landslide, the magnificent and historic Presidential Election of 2024. ALL SEVEN SWING STATES, 312 ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES, AND THE POPULAR VOTE BY MILLIONS OF VOTERS (Despite large scale voter fraud taking place in numerous states, including California, where votes are ridiculously still being counted, or under review!), ALL WON WITH EASE, CALM, & PROFESSIONALISM,” Trump posted.
Praising the Republican campaign as “legendary,” Trump contrasted it with the Democratic effort. “Republicans are being praised for having run a ‘legendary’ campaign! Democrats are being excoriated for their effort, having wasted 2.5 Billion Dollars, much of it unaccounted for, with some being used to illegally buy endorsements ($11,000,000 to Beyoncé, who never even sang a song, $2,000,000 to Oprah for doing next to nothing, and even $500,000 to Reverend AL, a professional con man and instigator, who agreed to ‘interview’ their ‘star spangled’ candidates, Kamala and Joe). We ran a flawless campaign, having spent FAR LESS, with lots of money left over.”
