Kamala Harris and Biden Respond to Shooting Incident Near Donald Trump

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris quickly addressed the situation after former President Donald Trump was declared “safe” following gunfire near the Trump National Golf Club on Sunday.

Reports indicated that shots were fired at or near Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump, who is a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, was playing golf.

The White House released a statement confirming that Biden and Harris had been briefed on the incident and would continue receiving updates as the investigation progresses. The statement expressed that they were “relieved to know that he is safe.”

“The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the White House said.

On X, formerly Twitter, Harris condemned the violence, stating, “violence has no place in America.”

“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Harris wrote.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, communications director for Trump’s campaign, told Newsweek on Sunday.

Trump also released a statement via his campaign, saying, “I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”

The former president had returned to Florida for the weekend after holding a series of campaign events on the West Coast.

The Secret Service announced that they were working with local authorities to investigate the incident, which occurred just before 2 p.m.

“The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe,” said Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, reiterated, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”

According to two sources familiar with the event, Trump was golfing at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon when agents heard shots being fired. He was quickly taken to a secure room at the club. The Secret Service has expressed concerns for years about Trump’s exposure on his golf courses, which are often partially open to the public and close to busy areas, reported the Washington Post.

“No one was believed to have been struck by the shots, the sources said. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. The Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation and ‘will have more details soon,’ Guglielmi posted on X, reaffirming that Trump ‘is safe,’” the Post added.

Authorities with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office apprehended a suspect on Interstate 95 after the individual allegedly attempted to flee on foot, a source briefed on the situation said.
