Kamala Harris Interviews Top 3 VP Candidates, Announcement Coming in Next 24 Hours: Report
Vice President Kamala Harris has met with three finalists in her search for a running mate, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday.
Harris met with Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania on Sunday, as reported by The New York Times. The meetings took place at her Naval Observatory residence in Washington D.C.
On Saturday, Kelly posted a message on X.
“Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate, or visiting our troops overseas: I’ve learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call,” he wrote.
Progressives have been advocating for Walz over Kelly or Shapiro.
Shawn Fain, president of the United Automobile Workers union, expressed his preference for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear as Harris's running mate during a CBS interview on Sunday, according to CBS.
Although Beshear was considered a potential candidate, he did not meet with Harris on Sunday, according to the Times report.
Fain also supported Walz, describing him as “an awesome big guy for labor.”
However, he was less enthusiastic about Shapiro, citing the governor’s previous support for school vouchers as “one of the bigger issues we see with Shapiro.”
Fain also mentioned that Kelly’s voting record on labor issues was a “problem area for us.”
Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is reportedly opposing Shapiro, according to Politico, which cited unnamed sources.
Fetterman believes that Shapiro “is excessively focused on his own personal ambitions,” according to the report.
The report also indicated that a disagreement over prison reform has contributed to the rift between Shapiro and Fetterman.
ABC reported that on Tuesday, Harris and her running mate will embark on a seven-day tour of swing states.
