Lara Trump Addresses Senate Rumors After Statement from Ron DeSantis
Republican National Committee (RNC) co-chair Lara Trump expressed on Monday that it would be “an honor” to serve Florida in the U.S. Senate.
The potential vacancy could arise in January, as Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida is expected to transition into the role of Secretary of State in the Trump administration.
Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, President-elect Donald Trump’s eldest son, has been floated as a possible contender for the Senate seat.
During an appearance on WABC with hosts John Catsimatidis and Rita Cosby, she shared her thoughts on the matter.
“This is obviously up to the governor,” Trump stated, clarifying that she has not yet spoken to Governor DeSantis about the opportunity.
“I do know the Make-America-Great-Again-America-First agenda better than anyone,” she remarked. “I’ve lived it for nine years right alongside Donald Trump.”
She further emphasized her commitment to the agenda, saying, “I’ve been really honored to serve as co-chair of the RNC throughout the duration of his campaign.”
When asked about potentially stepping into the Senate role, Trump said, “If I’m asked to serve in the capacity of the United States Senate, it’s something I would seriously consider.”
“We need great people in the Senate,” she added, pointing to the importance of supporting the president-elect’s initiatives and confirming his appointments.
According to Trump, the Senate has a duty to advance “the mandates that the American people said we must have.”
She outlined what she believes Americans want: “We want our country back. We want a closed border. We want more money in our pockets. We want no new wars. We want to end what’s going on in the Middle East and in Europe.”
“If it’s something I’m asked to do, it would truly be an honor,” she reiterated.
Governor DeSantis shared his perspective in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Senator Marco Rubio is expected to resign from the Senate to assume duties as Secretary of State when the Trump administration takes power on January 20th, creating a vacancy roughly two months from today,” he posted.
DeSantis mentioned that several candidates have already expressed interest and that the vetting process is underway. “More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January,” he noted.
He also outlined the qualities he’s seeking in Rubio’s successor: “Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results.”
As reported by the New York Post, the appointee will serve until a special election in 2026. The winner of that election will complete the remainder of Rubio’s term, ending in 2028.
Lara Trump has received endorsements from Republican leaders, including Sens. Rick Scott of Florida, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Katie Britt of Alabama, along with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida.
