Large Explosion Near Texas Airport Triggers Major Emergency Response

A fire and explosion at the El Paso transit facility's maintenance center left two individuals in critical condition on Tuesday.
According to KTSM, more than 100 firefighters and 48 units responded to the emergency.
Deputy Fire Chief Robert Arvizu stated that the fire and explosion broke out shortly after 1 p.m. inside the Sun Metro Operations Center’s indoor maintenance area.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Seven individuals sustained injuries in the incident. Four were taken to the hospital, with two in critical condition.
One of the injured, Sun Metro employee German Garcia, suffered severe injuries and is currently in critical condition at a burn unit in Phoenix, according to Daphne Flores, who identified herself as a family friend, as reported by the El Paso Times.
“Today has been both a miracle and a devastating day. Our beloved German, a devoted family man, was tragically caught in the Sun Metro fire and has suffered life-threatening injuries. He is currently receiving critical care in Phoenix, AZ, where he will need to remain for an extended period as he fights to recover,” Flores wrote on a GoFundMe page created to support Garcia’s family.

She also noted, “During this unimaginable time, his family is facing not only emotional distress but also the overwhelming financial burden of medical expenses, travel, and daily needs. We are reaching out to our community, friends, and anyone willing to help support them through this hardship.”
As a result of the incident, El Paso’s public transportation system has shifted to a reduced schedule.
“We understand that the public and the media have many questions, and we are committed to providing answers,” Sun Metro Director Anthony Dekeyzer told KTSM.
“However, at this time, we ask for patience as we focus on supporting our staff and stabilizing operations,” he added.

KFOX-TV reported that the fire and explosion led to evacuations on Tuesday.
According to KFOX, a second injured individual was also transported to a burn unit in Phoenix, though their identity has not been disclosed.
The El Paso Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson shared his concern, stating, “My thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured, their families, and everyone affected by this devastating incident.”
