Obama Caught In ‘Telling’ Moment During ‘Hypocritical’ Forum Speech
During the Obama Foundation’s 2024 Democracy Forum, former President Barack Obama’s remarks drew sharp criticism, with many accusing him of projecting his party’s actions onto Republicans. Observers noted that some of his statements might be labeled as conspiracy theories if made by a Republican figure.
Critics particularly focused on Obama’s accusations of Republicans "weaponizing" the Justice Department and "politicizing" the military—actions many argue align more closely with Democratic behavior in power.
“Pluralism depends on everyone following a certain set of rules,” Obama stated. He questioned, “What happens when the other side has repeatedly and abundantly made clear they are not interested in playing by the rules?”
At one point, Obama commented, “There are going to be times potentially when one side tries to stack the deck and lock in [pause] a permanent grip on power,” seemingly hesitating as he touched on controversial topics. He further alleged tactics such as voter suppression, politicizing the armed forces, and using the judiciary to target opponents. “In those circumstances, a line has been crossed, and we have to stand firm and speak out and organize,” he added.
Social media erupted with reactions, with critics pointing out the perceived hypocrisy in Obama’s speech. Former actor Kevin Sorbo quipped that Obama “[a]lmost broke character for a sec,” while conservative commentator Collin Rugg noted that the “pause was telling.”
Obama’s influence reportedly played a role in President Joe Biden’s decision not to pursue reelection after a difficult debate against President-elect Donald Trump in June. Hollywood actor George Clooney, who supported Biden’s departure through an op-ed, now reportedly feels “used” by Obama and is angered by the fallout.
“George is furious with Obama for disappearing after the election disaster and leaving him holding the bag for pushing the plan with his Hollywood pals,” an entertainment industry insider shared with RadarOnline.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who faced a significant loss in the 2024 presidential election, is reportedly exploring future political moves. According to CNN’s Isaac Dovere, Harris is considering a 2026 California gubernatorial run or another presidential campaign in 2028.
“What she’s been saying to people over the last couple of weeks, donors, [and] supporters is, ‘You haven’t seen the last of me. I’m not going quietly into the night,’” Dovere said.
Advisors close to Harris are debating her options. Some argue she deserves another presidential run, while others caution against it, noting potential challenges within the Democratic Party. Harris has allegedly stated her determination to “stay in the fight.”
Democratic strategist Theryn Bond, however, urged Harris not to pursue another presidential campaign, warning of potential setbacks.
Obama’s speech and the subsequent Democratic infighting highlight ongoing tensions within the party following a tough election cycle. As key figures chart their next moves, the implications for the party’s future remain uncertain.
