Pelosi Back Home Following Hip Surgery After Falling In Europe

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi returned to California this week after a fall during her European trip led to a hip replacement surgery. The incident occurred while she was wearing “very high” heels.

“Speaker Pelosi is well on the mend and continues to work,” her spokesperson Ian Krager told the New York Post.

Pelosi slipped on marble steps while visiting a World War II site in Luxembourg on Friday. Despite the fall, she immediately posed for a photo.

The incident occurred near the Grand Ducal Palace staircase, where Pelosi lost her footing, said House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas).

“I was right next to her. She likes to wear high heels — very high. She was on one of her last steps on this marble staircase that didn’t have a railing and she lost her footing and fell to the ground. I immediately helped pick her up. And we took a picture of that. You can see me holding her up by her hand, and then very soon thereafter, a vehicle showed up and took her to the hospital,” McCaul recounted to reporters.

In a photo taken at the event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Pelosi appeared unsteady, holding onto McCaul’s hand for support.

Following the fall, Pelosi underwent hip surgery at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany on Saturday.

“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” Krager confirmed.

“She’s 84, but when I talked to her on the phone, she had a lot of energy. Very spunky. She wants to get out of there, she wants to fly back home to the United States. Overall, she’s in good spirits,” McCaul said Tuesday.

Although she stepped down from her leadership role in 2023, Pelosi continues to represent San Francisco in Congress and remains a prominent Democratic figure. It is unclear when she will be cleared to return to the U.S. after her surgery.

Pelosi has been a pivotal figure in Democratic politics and was instrumental in influencing President Joe Biden’s decision to step away from his re-election bid earlier this year.

The resounding victory of President-elect Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris is seen as signaling a shift away from the influence of veteran politicians like Pelosi within the Democratic Party.

Pelosi, described as the woman “who for decades reigned as kingmaker in her party,” now faces the reality of her influence waning in the aftermath of Harris’s defeat, as noted by the UK’s DailyMail.com this month.

Her diminishing political standing follows months of involvement in efforts to pressure Biden to step aside.

The 84-year-old was reportedly involved in a heated exchange with Democratic insider and former DNC Chair Donna Brazile during Harris’s concession speech at Howard University in November.

According to reports, Pelosi is leading the charge in the Democratic blame game following Harris’s loss.

“The influences of a [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer or a Pelosi or a movie star or an Obama deciding to anoint somebody – those guys are gone,” said investor and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary. “In four years, they won’t have that kind of influence,” he added, referencing George Clooney’s public call for Biden to step aside after a poor debate performance against Trump.

Some Republicans have pointed directly at Pelosi for the Democrats’ significant losses, including the Senate flipping red and the House remaining contested.

“You’ve got to blame Nancy Pelosi,” said former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a recent Fox News interview.

Pelosi has also been cited as a key figure in Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race, a move that McCarthy described as undermining the democratic process since voters had already cast their ballots for Biden in the primaries, only to see Harris take the nomination.

“Joe Biden never should have run for office. I knew it when I sat with him. There was something wrong with him,” McCarthy remarked.
