Popular Congressman Running For Florida Governor
The announcement on Wednesday that a prominent Republican congressman is gearing up to run as Governor Ron DeSantis’ successor has shaken up the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race.
With DeSantis reaching his term limit, Florida will soon welcome a new leader who will inherit a thriving southern economy bolstered by low taxes and reduced regulations—key factors that have drawn Americans to the Sunshine State in recent years. While the prospect of succeeding the former presidential contender is enticing, standing out in the competitive field will demand strong fundraising capabilities and significant name recognition.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), a staunch ally of former President Trump, possesses both attributes. According to insiders, Donalds has informed supporters and key donors of his intention to run. At last week’s state Republican Party gathering in Orlando, Donalds hosted a suite where he began sharing his plans, according to attendees.
Since then, further signs of his candidacy have emerged. Donalds has dedicated much of this week to meeting with influential Florida lobbyists and fundraisers, seeking to solidify his base and safeguard his position in what is expected to be a competitive GOP primary.
“He was in town [Tallahassee] meeting with all the folks you need to meet with. He told them he is in,” a source familiar with Donalds’ plans told NBC News. “It’s the steps any candidate takes as they prepare to run for governor.”
When asked about his political aspirations, Donalds stated: “I’m fully focused on helping President Trump pass his America First Agenda. Florida will proudly lead the way.”
Notably, despite Donalds’ vocal support for Trump during campaign stops with Black audiences last year, he has not been offered a role in the president-elect’s administration. This may suggest Trump recognizes that Donalds is already setting his sights on the Florida governor’s mansion.
If true, Donalds could benefit from a narrowing field of competitors. While several high-profile names initially surfaced, some potential contenders have already declared intentions elsewhere.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis recently announced plans to run for Matt Gaetz’s seat in the 1st congressional district. Meanwhile, State Attorney General Ashley Moody is reportedly President-elect Trump’s favored choice to succeed Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate.
With these departures, Donalds’ main competition appears to be Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, a former state Senate president.
However, Matt Gaetz has yet to completely rule out a return to elected office. After withdrawing his nomination for U.S. Attorney General, Gaetz took on a lucrative anchor position at One America News, though questions remain about his long-term satisfaction with the role.
“Florida needs a Governor who can break the control insurance companies have over Tallahassee. I can do that, so it’s something Ginger and I are considering,” Gaetz told NBC when asked about the possibility of entering the gubernatorial race.
