Putin Issues Nuclear Warning, Draws Red Line for Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin made alarming remarks directed towards the U.S. during an interview on Wednesday, as he cautioned against excessive American support for Ukraine without facing consequences.

Putin, interviewed by Russian news agencies ahead of the upcoming elections expected to secure him another six-year term, issued a stern warning about the potential for conflict escalation, particularly concerning nuclear capabilities.

"From a military-technical standpoint, we are, of course, prepared," Putin asserted in response to inquiries about Russia's readiness for nuclear warfare, as reported by Reuters.

Putin emphasized America's understanding that any U.S. military presence in Ukraine would be perceived as intervention, though he expressed doubt regarding the likelihood of such a scenario.

"Apart from [President Joe] Biden, there are plenty of other experts in Russian-American relations and strategic restraint. So, I don't foresee a direct collision, but we are prepared for it," Putin remarked, according to CNN.

Throughout the Ukraine invasion, Putin and Russian officials have consistently reminded the world of Russia's nuclear capabilities and their willingness to employ them if provoked.

Putin reiterated Russia's military doctrine, specifying conditions under which nuclear weapons could be used, such as in response to a nuclear attack or if Russia's existence is threatened.

"Weapons exist to be used," Putin emphasized, as reported by Reuters. "We have our principles."

Regarding negotiations concerning Ukraine, Putin indicated Russia's readiness for substantive discussions but emphasized the need for realism rather than fanciful expectations.

"Russia is open to negotiations on Ukraine, but they must be grounded in reality — not the delusions induced by psychotropic drugs," Putin remarked.

Putin underscored the importance of ensuring compliance with any agreements reached in negotiations.

Addressing U.S. readiness, Putin suggested that America is not currently prepared to initiate nuclear warfare but acknowledged ongoing efforts to enhance military capabilities.

"They are setting goals to enhance modernization and innovation. They have a corresponding plan. We are aware of it. They are developing all their components. So are we," Putin remarked.

Putin's recent comments echo similar sentiments expressed last month, particularly in response to Western statements about potential troop deployments in Ukraine, as reported by CNN.

Putin highlighted recent drone strikes within Russia orchestrated by Ukraine, attributing them to attempts to disrupt Russian elections and gain leverage in negotiations.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova accused the U.S. of interference in the elections, citing alleged plans for a cyberattack on Russia's voting systems and efforts to suppress voter turnout, as per The Guardian.
