Republican Leader Found DEAD In Home Under Mysterious Circumstances
The Tullahoma Police Department (TPD) made a grim discovery on Tuesday as they found Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny deceased inside his residence. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has initiated an inquiry into his death.
Judd Matheny, aged 53, had a notable career in public service. He represented District 47 as a Republican member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 2002 to 2018. Later, on August 4, 2022, he was elected as Coffee County’s mayor.
According to the TPD, Matheny was discovered dead at his residence on 1909 E Lincoln St. after police responded to a call reporting a potential death, shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The TPD confirmed that the TBI had taken over the ongoing investigation into Matheny’s death.
In a Facebook post, the TPD extended their condolences, saying, “Mayor Matheny dedicated his life to serving our community, both as a successful businessman, farmer, and as a committed public servant. His leadership and dedication will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
Matheny’s passing occurred just a day after the release of the latest episode of The Mayor’s Message, a weekly YouTube program where Matheny interacted with locals and provided updates about the county.
Following the announcement of Matheny’s death, numerous expressions of condolences poured in.
Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett expressed his sorrow, saying, “I am heartbroken to hear about the passing of my longtime friend and public servant, Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny.”
Representatives Mark Green (R-TN-07) and John Rose (R-TN-06) also issued statements honoring Matheny’s legacy and expressing sympathy for his family during this difficult time.
“Camie and I join Tennesseans in praying for the family and loved ones of Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny. A statesman, businessman, and farmer, his service as Mayor and a State Representative will never be forgotten,” Green said.
Rose called Matheny’s death “an unexpected and tragic loss,” adding that the mayor will be “remembered by many for his decades of public service, both at the county and state level.”
“I hope you’ll join me in praying for his family and friends in the days ahead,” Rose said.
