Retiring Congresswoman Turns on Swamp, Calls for Handover of Power

Democrat Rep. Annie Kuster of New Hampshire announced her decision to retire, citing her belief that she isn’t the best fit to oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda in his second term. Kuster’s retirement, reported by The Boston Globe on Thursday, aligns with calls from Trump supporters to “drain the swamp.”

Elected in 2012, Kuster’s 12-year tenure is modest compared to long-serving figures like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, elected in 1984, or former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has served since 1987. However, her decision highlights a broader issue: the absence of term limits in Congress.

Congressional longevity has led to a concentration of older lawmakers, with the median age in the House at 57 and the Senate at 65, according to Pew Research. McConnell, at 82, and Pelosi, at 84, embody the challenge of balancing experience with the need for fresh perspectives.

Kuster explained her decision, stating, “Twelve years is a good amount of time to put your shoulder to the wheel and try to make a difference. I think we made a difference, not just in changing policy, changing funding, but changing attitudes.”

She also expressed hope that her retirement might inspire others, saying, “I think there are colleagues — some very productive — but others who just stay forever.”

Critics of aging politicians might point to Trump’s age, as he turned 78 in June. However, presidents are already subject to term limits, and Trump’s selection of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, just 40 years old, reflects his intent to inject youth into his administration.

Without term limits for Congress, the cycle of entrenched political figures remains unbroken. Kuster’s departure may not spark sweeping change, but it underscores the need for reforms to prevent the swamp from simply refilling itself.
