Secret Service Pulls RFK Jr.'s Protection After He Suspends Campaign and Backs Trump

The Secret Service protection reluctantly granted to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been revoked following his announcement of support for former President Donald Trump.

Kennedy presented his endorsement of Trump as a suspension of his campaign, which had managed to secure a spot on the ballot in around 20 states, according to CBS.

He stated that his aim was to withdraw from the race in areas where his presence on the ballot could hinder efforts to defeat Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Mr. Kennedy no longer has USSS,” confirmed Stefanie Spear, Kennedy’s press secretary.

Kennedy had been requesting Secret Service protection from the Biden administration for months but only received it after the attempted assassination of Trump on July 13.

By law, the Secret Service is obligated to protect major presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of the election, though other candidates may also receive protection.

A report from the New York Post noted that the Secret Service confirmed it was no longer providing security for Kennedy.

“That’s correct. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is no longer receiving U.S. Secret Service protection,” a Secret Service representative said.

In 2023, Kennedy’s campaign made multiple requests for protection for the candidate, who is the son of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy of New York, assassinated in 1968 while pursuing the Democratic presidential nomination. President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, was Kennedy’s uncle.

The calls for protection intensified after an intruder was found at Kennedy’s home, claiming he wanted to speak with the candidate, according to a campaign news release.

At that time, the campaign issued a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, arguing that denying Kennedy protection violated a 55-year precedent.

In September 2023, a man was arrested for bringing a weapon to a Kennedy event while wearing a U.S. Marshal’s Service badge. He was charged with a weapons violation and impersonating a U.S. marshal, according to KNBC.

Despite these incidents, Secret Service protection was not forthcoming.
