Secret Service Urges Trump to Move Rallies Indoors
The iconic political rallies of former President Donald Trump are being advised to relocate indoors, according to a new report.
Following the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the Secret Service is urging the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign to hold its signature rallies indoors, as reported by The Washington Post on Tuesday.
The outlet noted that the Secret Service has historically found Trump’s outdoor rallies challenging due to the extensive protection required.
According to unnamed sources cited in the report, there is now a renewed push for Trump to host indoor rallies in the wake of the assassination attempt.
The Trump campaign is reportedly exploring indoor venues for rallies instead of the usual outdoor settings such as parking lots, airports, fairgrounds, and football stadiums.
The report indicated that there are no immediate plans for outdoor rallies. Over the weekend, Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, held an indoor rally at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
However, Axios, which also cited unnamed sources, reported that the Trump campaign is not entirely ruling out future outdoor rallies.
Although the focus has shifted to indoor events, the campaign is collaborating with the Secret Service on protection plans for potential outdoor events.
Axios noted that in some instances when the Secret Service rejected campaign requests, events proceeded regardless. In other cases, when the Secret Service declined to provide what the outlet termed “assets,” the events were canceled.
Since the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, the Secret Service has not denied any campaign requests, according to Axios.
In an interview with Newsmax on Tuesday night, Trump emphasized the importance of tight security.
“Now, they have really beefed it up; they should have beefed it up before. I know that we’ve been asking for them to beef it up,” the former president said.
“You know, we have crowds of 40-50,000, 60,000 people. In New Jersey, we had 107,000 people, and when you have crowds like that, you need more people for the crowd — forget about me — and for me, too, as president, for any president,” he said.
“But you have to have more people. And I know that our people have been asking for more people consistently and not getting them.”
In a Tuesday post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the Biden administration over the protection provided.
“The Biden/Harris Administration did not properly protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy. IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO DO SO!” he wrote.
The Republican nominee is scheduled to hold a rally at Bojangles Coliseum — an indoor arena — in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday night.
