Speaker Johnson Just Issued MASSIVE Ban – Dems Erupt!
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) took a significant step on Wednesday by announcing a policy prohibiting transgender women from using women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and changing facilities within the Capitol building.
In a public statement, Johnson confirmed that the rule would apply to all areas of the Capitol, including the House office buildings and facilities. While his policy announcement was initially shared through a draft, the timeline for the official release of his remarks remains unclear, as previously reported by The Hill.
Under House rules, the Speaker holds “general control” over facilities within the chamber, granting Johnson the authority to implement this new policy regarding restrooms and other single-sex spaces. “All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” Johnson explained.
He emphasized that alternatives are available, stating, “It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.” Johnson added, “Women deserve women’s only spaces.”
The announcement coincided with the Transgender Day of Remembrance and followed the introduction of legislation by Representative Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina). This proposed bill seeks to prevent transgender women from accessing facilities on Capitol Hill that align with their gender identity. Mace’s legislation comes in response to the election of Sarah McBride (D-Delaware), the first transgender person elected to the House of Representatives.
“So if being a feminist makes me an extremist, I’m totally here for it,” Mace remarked to reporters on Tuesday. When asked directly whether her efforts were in response to McBride’s election, Mace replied, “Yes, and absolutely, and then some.”
Mace further elaborated, “I’m not going to stand for a man, someone with a penis, being in the women’s locker room—that’s not okay. As a survivor of abuse, including rape, I have PTSD from the trauma I’ve endured at the hands of a man. I understand how vulnerable women and girls are in private spaces.” She concluded, “I will fight this every step of the way.”
In response, McBride condemned the move, stating, “This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars.”
Johnson, when pressed for further comment, chose to remain measured in his response. “I’m not going to address the plans on any of that. I just told you what I’m going to say about the issue. I’m not going to engage in this,” he stated. “We don’t look down upon anyone. We treat everybody with dignity and respect. That’s a principle I’ve pursued my whole life. We’ll take care of this issue of first impression for Congress just as we would any other matter. We’ll provide appropriate accommodations for every member of Congress.”
