Tensions Between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris at Carter Funeral
CNN’s Jake Tapper observed a noticeably tense interaction between President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and their spouses during former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, describing the encounter as not “particularly warm.”
As the Bidens arrived at the National Cathedral, they briefly met Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Footage from inside the cathedral captured the moment, showing minimal eye contact and few handshakes between the two couples.
“There’s a President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. And I think he has 11 days left as president of the United States. Obviously an eventful year, one that he did not plan for,” Tapper commented during the broadcast.
“You didn’t see a particularly warm greeting between the first couple and the second couple. But again, we are at a funeral, so one has to take that into account when trying to read the body language of the individuals there,” he added.

Meanwhile, former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama were seen engaged in a friendly conversation earlier that morning at the U.S. Capitol.
During the state funeral honoring Carter, who passed away last month at age 100, all living presidents were present. As the nation mourned, subtle interactions between political figures drew attention.
When Harris sat down near Trump and Obama, their conversation briefly paused but resumed moments later. Trump leaned in toward Obama, prompting laughter from the former president. Melania Trump and Laura Bush, seated nearby, appeared more reserved, focusing forward. The Clintons were seen conversing with one another, and former President George W. Bush waved to other attendees.
Harris’s Political Future
Vice President Harris recently made headlines by certifying the results of the 2024 election, confirming Trump’s victory and acknowledging her defeat in the presidential race. Despite the outcome, reports indicate that Harris does not intend to exit the political stage quietly.
CNN correspondent Isaac Dovere disclosed that Harris is contemplating future political opportunities. According to Dovere, Harris has privately shared with supporters that she is considering running for governor of California in 2026 or mounting another presidential bid in 2028. She has reportedly expressed a strong desire to ensure her political career does not end with certifying Trump’s victory.
“We haven’t seen or heard much from Vice President Kamala Harris since she lost the election last month,” CNN’s Manu Raju reported. “But the Democratic Party is still grappling with Trump’s win.”
Dovere elaborated on Harris’s potential next moves.
“What she’s been telling donors and other backers is, ‘You haven’t seen the last of me. I’m not going quietly into the night.’ People close to her are weighing what that means. They don’t want her last significant act to be certifying Trump’s win,” Dovere stated.
“The California governor’s race in 2026 seems like a clear path for her. It’s seen as a solid opportunity where she could likely secure a victory without significant opposition. However, if she pursues that, it would limit her ability to run for president again in 2028,” he explained.
Advisers and close allies are split on the best course of action. Some argue Harris deserves another shot at the presidency in 2028, especially after facing challenges in the 2024 election. Others caution against another presidential bid, fearing it may end in another loss.
Harris has reportedly assured her supporters that she remains determined. “She’s staying in the fight,” Dovere concluded. The vice president’s political ambitions are likely to play a significant role in shaping the Democratic Party’s future strategy.
Democratic strategist Theryn Bond publicly urged Harris to reconsider another presidential campaign, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership within the party.
