'The Ship Is Sinking': Ex-'The View' Host Rips Into Show for Celebrity Attack

At least one former co-host of “The View” believes the show’s increasingly partisan outbursts are “sinking” the long-running daytime talk show.
Unsurprisingly, as is often the case with “The View”, the latest controversy revolves around President-elect Donald Trump.
During Tuesday’s episode of the ABC program, the panel discussed current headlines, such as the devastating California wildfires and the announcement that country music icon Carrie Underwood would perform at Trump’s upcoming inauguration.
Given the show’s usual anti-Trump stance, it didn’t take long for co-host Joy Behar to express strong disapproval of Underwood’s decision.
The entire Tuesday episode is embedded below, with Behar’s remarks starting at 12:26:
“You would not sing [at the inauguration]?” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Behar in a slightly playful tone.
“No, I would not,” Behar responded. “I would not normalize him.”
Behar continued, “[Underwood] says she loves her country. How do you love your country and support and normalize somebody who was a convicted felon, who really wants to destroy the country, in my opinion?
“I don’t understand how you say you love your country, at the same time as you normalize this convicted felon, which I can now say every day.”
(At present, Trump is actively seeking to overturn the largely symbolic conviction.)
Behar’s pointed remarks have not gone unnoticed, including by one of the show’s former co-hosts, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who took a strong stance against them during an appearance on Fox News’ Sean Hannity’s show.
According to Hasselbeck, the show risks going off the rails entirely if it continues engaging in what she called “ridiculous” rhetoric.
“She wants us to believe that Carrie Underwood [is un-American],” Hasselbeck said. “This is someone who won ‘American Idol’ by American votes, had an album and tour titled ‘All-American Girl,’ and has spent extensive time on USO tours, serving, helping, and donating to our nation’s military, their families, and our veterans. And now, she’s set to perform ‘America the Beautiful’ at the historic inauguration of the president of the United States of America.”
Hasselbeck further noted, “When those comments got passed around, even Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t agree with the outlandish remark of Joy Behar.”
(Indeed, as the discussion progressed, other co-hosts expressed little objection to Underwood’s decision to perform at the event.)
Hasselbeck didn’t hold back and directly criticized Behar:
“She wants to attach her name to Carrie Underwood’s name, so that she maintains relevance because they know the ship is sinking,” Hasselbeck said.
Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated on Jan. 20.
