Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is facing legal challenges for his criticisms of a key witness in the Biden controversy.
Anthony Bobulinski, a respected Navy veteran and former business associate of the Biden family, has filed a lawsuit against Raskin.
The lawsuit, filed today, accuses Raskin of spreading false information and defaming Bobulinski by labeling him a “Chinese or Russian spy” and a puppet of the Trump campaign, among other allegations.
According to court documents, Raskin is accused of deliberately tarnishing Bobulinski’s reputation in an effort to divert attention from alleged misconduct by the Biden family.
The lawsuit asserts that Raskin acted beyond his official duties, potentially making him personally liable.
The plaintiff, Anthony “Tony” Bobulinski, gained attention for his claims about the Biden family’s foreign business dealings, particularly with China. Despite denials, Bobulinski alleged that he met Joe Biden through his son Hunter and was aware of communications indicating Joe Biden’s involvement in his son’s business ventures.
The lawsuit stems from Raskin’s comments in a televised interview on MSNBC and on social media, where he cast doubt on the credibility of witnesses like Bobulinski as foreign agents. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and $20 million in damages for alleged harm to Bobulinski’s reputation and well-being.
During a March House Oversight Committee hearing, Bobulinski criticized Democratic Representatives Dan Goldman (D-NY) and Barbara Raskin for spreading falsehoods about the Biden family’s business dealings.
Raskin, a former law professor and lead manager in President Trump’s second impeachment trial, has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Legal experts anticipate that this case will test the boundaries of public officials’ free speech rights and the protections of the U.S. Constitution’s expression or Debate Clause, making it a significant legal matter. The March hearing, originally about the Biden family’s business transactions, devolved into personal attacks and political tensions.
Bobulinski’s revelation during the hearing that “The Big Guy” mentioned in correspondence about the Biden family’s finances refers to Joe Biden added fuel to the controversy. Despite challenges, Bobulinski remained steadfast in his assertions, leaving no doubt about his claims regarding Joe Biden’s involvement.
As a prominent critic of the Trump administration, Raskin faces a challenging period due to the legal dispute, drawing both support and criticism for his role in impeachment proceedings and investigations.
