Trump Delivers Harsh Critique of Liz Cheney's Potential FBI Issues

President-elect Donald Trump weighed in Wednesday on a new House report recommending criminal investigations into former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, a Republican, over her involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, investigation.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump cited the interim findings from the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, which suggest Cheney may have engaged in "possible criminal witness tampering." He noted, “numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, and these violations should be investigated by the FBI.”

Trump further remarked, “Liz Cheney could be in a lot of trouble based on the evidence obtained by the subcommittee.”

In essence, the incoming president made it clear that one of his political opponents might be facing significant legal jeopardy.

He also praised Georgia Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk, chair of the committee, for a “job well done.” The report, released Tuesday, examines Cheney's actions during the two-year investigation into the events of Jan. 6.

The subcommittee alleges Cheney “tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge.”

Hutchinson, a former aide to the Trump White House, purportedly “falsely claimed to have drafted a handwritten note for President Trump on January 6” and made other disputed claims, according to the subcommittee's findings.

The report recommended that the FBI “immediately review the testimony given by Hutchinson in this interview to determine if she also lied in her FBI interview, and, if so, the role former Representative Cheney played in instigating Hutchinson to radically change her testimony.”

It also pointed out that “Cassidy Hutchinson’s most outrageous claims lacked any evidence,” accusing the Jan. 6 Select Committee, established by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, of promoting statements they knew to be false.

Trump’s Truth Social post made it clear he remains focused on the political and legal fallout of Jan. 6 and is closely monitoring developments surrounding those who sought to implicate him in the events of that day.

Cheney, who served as vice chair of Pelosi’s committee, made her stance against Trump unmistakable. In the committee’s final report, she declared, “No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again.”

She also noted, “Prosecutors are considering the implications of the conduct we describe in this report. As are voters.”

Cheney’s open call for Trump to face charges did not go unnoticed. Now, with the political tide turning, Trump appears determined to highlight her potential legal troubles to the public.
