Trump Makes Decision on Top FBI Pick After MAGA Supporters Sounded Off
President-elect Donald Trump moved swiftly to address concerns from his supporters over rumors that he might appoint Mike Rogers as the next FBI director.
Dan Scavino, Trump’s longtime social media director and advisor, clarified the situation on his X account Friday morning.
“Just spoke to President Trump regarding Mike Rogers going to the FBI. It’s not happening — In his own words, ‘I have never even given it a thought.’ Not happening,” Scavino wrote.
Rogers, a former FBI agent, congressman, and House Intelligence Committee chairman, was considered a possible contender for the position after meeting with Trump’s transition team at Mar-a-Lago. However, opposition grew within the MAGA movement as details about Rogers’ background emerged.
In 2017, Rogers concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, calling it a “clear and present danger to our democracy.” This prompted MAGA critics to resurface old social media posts and raise concerns about Rogers’ alignment with Trump’s agenda.
Rogers also co-founded The Alliance for Securing Democracy, criticized by some as a “deep state Never Trump” organization. This group was behind the controversial Hamilton 68 project, which flagged U.S.-based social media accounts as potential sources of Russian disinformation, even targeting journalists and American citizens.
The speculation over Rogers comes amid shifts in Trump’s cabinet appointments, including Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrawing himself from consideration for Attorney General.
Gaetz shared on X that while his meetings with senators had been productive, his confirmation process was becoming “a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Gaetz as a “deeply gifted and tenacious attorney” with a distinguished career focused on Department of Justice reform. However, Trump quickly pivoted to announcing former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his nominee for Attorney General.
“Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,” Trump wrote.
“Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!”
Trump continued by emphasizing Bondi’s ability to restore integrity to the Department of Justice.
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,” he wrote. “I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Bondi’s nomination has sparked strong reactions, including from liberal commentators like MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson, who called her a “dangerous and effective pick” during an interview on The Beat With Ari Melber.
“Pam Bondi is exactly what I was saying in the last segment that we should all fear, because she’s competent,” Johnson stated. “We may not agree with her ideologically, but she actually knows how to do this job.”
He highlighted Bondi’s aggressive stances on immigration and education policies, noting, “Florida is one of those states that has been very aggressive about migrants and deportation and moving people to different states and everything else like that. Florida has enacted all sorts of rules and laws to curtail students and what they can do on campuses and finding legal justifications for manipulating education money.”
Johnson warned that Bondi’s expertise could make her more effective than Gaetz, despite Gaetz’s controversial background.
“She is a dangerous and effective pick, and that’s frankly worse than what we would have got with Matt Gaetz, even with the deplorable moral background that he has,” he said.
Johnson added, “While it might be a loss in the battle, I don’t necessarily think it’s a victory in the war against what may be an AG that ushers in an authoritarian type of presidency that affects the fundamental rights of American citizens.”
