Trump Reportedly Considering Former Rival for Cabinet Position as Pete Hegseth Struggles

As Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s defense secretary nominee, faces mounting allegations regarding his personal conduct, a new contender has reportedly entered the spotlight: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump’s former GOP primary rival.

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is “considering Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as a possible replacement for Pete Hegseth to lead the Pentagon,” citing sources familiar with the matter. This development comes amid concerns from Republican senators about Hegseth, a former Fox News host, and controversies tied to his private life.

The idea of DeSantis stepping into the role marks a surprising turn in Trump’s relationship with his one-time 2024 GOP presidential opponent. DeSantis, a Navy veteran with a record of military service in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, brings a mix of conservative credentials and experience in public office that could smooth the path to Senate confirmation.

DeSantis had been on an initial list of potential defense secretary nominees drafted by Trump’s transition team, owing to his military background and alignment with Trump’s views on curbing what they see as “woke” policies in the armed forces. Despite this, Trump initially chose Hegseth, whose selection was seen as unconventional due to his lack of government experience but strong advocacy for veterans.

Hegseth’s candidacy, however, has been marred by controversy. The most serious issue is a 2017 sexual assault allegation, for which no charges were filed. Hegseth’s defenders argue the accusation was an attempt to deflect attention from a consensual extramarital affair. Media scrutiny has further focused on his personal life, including a leaked email from his mother criticizing his treatment of women following his divorce in 2018.

More troubling for Trump’s transition team has been Hegseth’s lack of transparency about these matters. According to a CNN report, a senior transition official claimed Hegseth “has not been forthright with the Transition team staff and the president-elect.” There are also fears that more allegations could surface from his time at Fox News.

Hegseth is scheduled to appear on Fox News alongside his mother in an attempt to salvage his nomination. Transition officials reportedly view the next 48 hours as critical to determining his future.

“Trump allies increasingly think Hegseth may not survive further scrutiny,” The Wall Street Journal reported, adding that the nominee can only afford to lose three Republican votes in the Senate to secure confirmation.

In contrast, DeSantis offers a vetted and seasoned alternative. His time in government and his robust military background, combined with his shared stance on military policy, could make him a more viable nominee.

The consideration of DeSantis also reflects a significant thawing in his relationship with Trump. Once seen as a staunch Trump ally, DeSantis became a rival when he challenged the former president in the 2024 GOP primary. Trump ultimately won the primary handily, and allies have since worked to repair their relationship.

“Trump and DeSantis both attended a Tuesday memorial service for fallen law enforcement officers in Palm Beach County, Florida,” the Journal noted. “The idea has been presented to DeSantis in recent days, according to a person familiar with the discussions.”

While no Republican senators have publicly opposed Hegseth’s nomination, reports suggest at least six are considering voting against him. Additionally, Hegseth is expected to face significant resistance from Democrats, particularly over his limited government experience and his controversial stance on women serving in combat roles.

“He obviously has a chance to defend himself here. But some of this stuff is – it’s going to be difficult,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
