Trump Scores Supreme Court Win Against Disgraced Attorney Michael Cohen
The U.S. Supreme Court has officially put an end to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s attempt to sue former President Donald Trump.
Without providing any comments, the court dismissed Cohen’s appeal, thereby upholding the lower court’s decision to dismiss the lawsuit, according to Fox News.
Cohen, who had been released from prison during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, was later returned to custody. He alleged that his re-imprisonment was in retaliation for a book he wrote criticizing Trump.
In his lawsuit, Cohen sought financial compensation from Trump, former Attorney General William Barr, federal prison officials, and the U.S. government.
“Michael Cohen has exhausted every avenue of his pathetic attempt to drag my client into court time and time again,” stated Trump attorney Alina Habba.
“As expected, the Supreme Court has correctly denied Michael Cohen’s petition, and he must finally abandon his frivolous and desperate claims,” Habba continued.
Cohen had originally been incarcerated due to his work with Trump, and after being granted home confinement, he was returned to prison for refusing to restrict his social media activity and media appearances.
Claiming this was retaliation, Cohen filed the lawsuit.
After the court rejected his appeal, Cohen responded, according to NBC, by saying, “The American people can no longer speak freely without fear of incarceration by a corrupt president and his/her willing and complicit underlings.”
“These are basic, fundamental rights that make America the beacon of democracy. Now, the guardrails are gone!” he added.
CBS reported that both the Trump and Biden administrations agreed in opposing the case being heard by the Supreme Court.
Habba argued that siding with Cohen could undermine essential presidential powers.
“Among other things, it would upend the constitutional separation of powers, curtail the President’s ability to effectively perform his duties, and destroy the very concept of Presidential immunity,” Habba wrote in her legal filing.
In her submission, Habba emphasized that it was “imperative” for the court not to take up Cohen’s appeal.
