Vance Says Trump in ‘Good Spirits’ After Second Assassination Attempt

Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance responded to the second assassination attempt on his running mate, former President Donald Trump, expressing his relief that Trump remained unharmed.

“I’m glad President Trump is safe,” Vance wrote on X. “I spoke to him before the news broke, and he was, remarkably, in good spirits. There’s still a lot we don’t know, but I’ll be holding my kids tighter tonight and saying a prayer of thanks.”

According to the FBI, they are investigating what they called “an attempted assassination of former President Trump” after the U.S. Secret Service opened fire on a man suspected of carrying a long gun at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect fled but was apprehended by police, and no injuries were reported.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris issued statements shortly after learning that Trump was “safe” following shots fired near Trump National Golf Club on Sunday.

Reports indicate that shots were fired at or near the Trump National Golf Club, where Trump, the 2024 GOP presidential hopeful, was golfing.

The White House issued a statement saying that both Biden and Harris had been briefed and would continue to receive updates on the investigation. The statement noted, “They are relieved to know that he is safe.”

“The President and Vice President have been informed about the security incident at Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was playing. They are relieved to hear that he is safe and will be provided regular updates,” the White House’s statement read.

Harris, in a post on X, condemned the event, declaring, “violence has no place in America.”

“I’ve been briefed on the reports of gunfire near former President Trump’s property in Florida and am glad that he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Harris stated.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. There are no further details at this moment,” Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, told Newsweek on Sunday afternoon.

“The Secret Service, in cooperation with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. He is safe,” said Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

According to The Washington Post, two individuals briefed on the situation stated that Trump was on the golf course at Trump International Golf Club when agents heard the gunshots. Trump was swiftly taken to a secure room within the club. The Secret Service has long raised concerns about Trump’s exposure while on his golf courses, as these venues are partly open to the public and located near high-traffic areas.

“No one appears to have been injured by the gunfire,” the sources added. Secret Service spokesperson Guglielmi confirmed the incident happened just before 2 p.m. He reiterated that “Trump is safe” and assured that more details would be shared soon.
