Watch: Bret Baier Coolly Turns the Tables on 'Ex-Friend' Chuck Todd After Nasty Attack

Just weeks after revealing he was leaving NBC News, Chuck Todd unexpectedly took aim at Fox News journalists — with Brett Baier being the primary target.
During a conversation posted on Sam Stein’s X account on February 19, Stein interviewed Todd and asked him a pointed question about the Associated Press. The AP had recently made headlines for being denied access to certain White House locations and events after refusing to follow former President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of America.
Stein asked Todd, “I’m not gonna say, I’m disappointed that [Fox News is] not standing up for the AP because I never expected them to stand up for the AP, but I’m wondering if you’re disappointed, having stood up for Fox yourself?”
The timing of the question was curious since Fox News had already signed a joint letter, alongside several other media outlets, urging the White House to restore the AP’s access.
Nevertheless, Todd gave his response.

“I’ve given up,” Todd said.
“I’ve handed my credibility to a handful of journalists over there who’ve never reciprocated when times were tough,” he continued. Todd then stumbled slightly before taking direct aim at Baier’s role within the network.
“We’ve seen the evolution of one of their larger news personalities go from trying really hard to follow in Brit Hume’s footsteps and suddenly looks more like Sean Hannity everyday.” This remark was a clear swipe at Baier, who now hosts “Special Report,” the same program Brit Hume once anchored.
Todd admitted he had misjudged Baier, once believing Baier prioritized journalism, but now concluded Baier “just wants to have teatime with the president.”
Later, in a C-SPAN clip released Thursday, Semafor Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith asked Baier to respond to the comments from his “ex-friend.”
Baier replied, “I don’t know what promoted Chuck to do that. I have an interview to do with the U.K. prime minister today. So, I don’t know what he’s doing.”

When asked about the “teatime” jab, Baier defended himself by saying, “that any journalist would want to get in [President Donald Trump’s] mind of what’s next.”
He also took the opportunity to highlight Fox News’ track record, noting the network’s history of breaking stories before competitors and reminding Smith that “We’re the most watched.”
In the end, Baier handled the situation with composure, turning Todd’s critique into an opportunity to underscore his own success — a stark contrast to Todd’s own struggles to remain in the spotlight.
