Despite the hurdles, Holtz noted, “You didn’t moan. You didn’t complain. You didn’t say ‘woe is me.’ You just went about and continued to do what you felt was in the best interests of this country, and now you’ve been rewarded.”
Holtz lauded Trump as an inspirational figure, saying, “I can’t think of a better person to emulate their life after than how you’ve handled this crisis.”
He also highlighted Trump’s close-knit family, emphasizing, “Your family is unbelievable. I look at how good a person is by his children. Your children are beautiful. Your wife is unbelievably beautiful.” But he added that what stands out even more is Trump’s genuine concern for others. “You care. You care about other people, and I believe you will do a fantastic job at leading this country out of the problems we have.”
Holtz expressed his own support along with that of millions of Americans, saying, “There are millions of ‘em just like me that stand here ready to help you any way we possibly can.” He closed his message with, “God bless you. Congratulations. You deserve it. And the real winners are the people of this country.”
Holtz, who had an impactful 34-year career coaching football at both the college and professional levels, is well-known for his time leading Arkansas, Notre Dame, and South Carolina, as well as a one-year stint with the NFL’s New York Jets.
In 2020, Trump awarded Holtz the Presidential Medal of Freedom. During the ceremony, Trump praised Holtz’s resilience and respect among his players, saying, “Everybody loves him. Everybody respects him. He’s tough as hell, and yet they all respect Lou.” Trump highlighted Holtz’s philosophy, quoting him: “‘I never coached football; I coached life.’”
Reflecting on his journey, Holtz, who graduated in the lower third of his high school class, said he felt “fortunate” to be honored. He expressed deep respect for Trump, referring to him as “the greatest president during my lifetime,” and humbly acknowledged, “I’m recognized for what other people did. I never made a block or a tackle, but I did try to teach people to make good choices.”
