Watch: Nancy Pelosi Struggles with Kamala’s Loss as Tense Moment Unfolds on Camera
Some might call it schadenfreude. Others may view it as a natural satisfaction in seeing people face the consequences of their actions. Either way, observing certain public figures endure their own self-made woes can be undeniably gratifying.
While no honest individual would choose to navigate the world from the perspective of California’s Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi, trying to see things through her lens in light of President-elect Donald Trump’s significant victory can be insightful.
On Wednesday, during live coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris’s concession speech, cameras captured Pelosi, the former House speaker, in an intense exchange with veteran Democratic strategist Donna Brazile.
In footage posted on social media platform X, Brazile can be seen throwing up her hands twice, shaking her head—a gesture that typically conveys disbelief or frustration.
Pelosi’s response involved nodding along and gesturing with her hands up and down.
Additionally, it’s notable that, among the roughly two dozen visible faces in the video, only Pelosi wore sunglasses. Unless she has unique light sensitivity, this could suggest a conscious—or unconscious—attempt to mask her emotions.
Further underscoring Pelosi’s possible dismay, the New York Post reported she ignored questions from their reporters on Wednesday.
The Post also hired a forensic lip reader to interpret comments made by Washington, D.C., Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser, who stood between Pelosi and Brazile.
"Come on,” Bowser reportedly said. “Please … please.”
Brazile later posted on X, insisting that her discussion with Pelosi was simply about uncalled House races.
Regardless of what truly happened—and high-ranking Democrats aren’t typically known for transparency—there’s little doubt that Pelosi has ample reason for gloom. The Post even captured a telling image of her expression.
On Friday’s cover, the Post featured that very image with the clever headline, “Blue Hoo!”
Indeed, Pelosi may have more reasons than anyone else to feel dispirited.
For one, the 84-year-old congresswoman played a prominent role in the Democratic Party’s decision that ultimately removed President Joe Biden from the 2024 race.
A Post reporter asked Pelosi, “Do you think it was a mistake to kick Joe Biden off the ballot?” The former speaker didn’t respond.
Moreover, questions have arisen as to whether the new Trump administration’s Justice Department might take interest in Pelosi’s notably profitable stock transactions.
Furthermore, Pelosi, who has long battled what some call Trump Derangement Syndrome, must now face the reality that she will turn 88 before Trump finishes his upcoming term. This means his influence may loom over her in the twilight of her career.
In short, no matter what she may have said to Brazile, Pelosi appeared—and likely felt—miserable. And for Americans who value justice, her misery is a small victory.
