Watch: Panel Turns on CNN Host Live On-Air After She Lies About Kamala's Fracking Position - 'That's Not True!'
The mainstream media frequently goes out of its way to shield establishment politicians, such as Vice President Kamala Harris.
That’s why, when real-time pushback occurs, it’s particularly satisfying to witness.
On Wednesday during CNN's “News Night with Abby Phillip,” a six-person panel, including former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner and CNN contributor Scott Jennings, immediately shut down Phillip’s attempt to mislead viewers about Vice President Kamala Harris’s record on fracking.
In fact, the panel’s sharp and near-unanimous reaction was so swift that it was hard to discern who first shouted, “That’s not true!”
Phillip’s misleading remark came amid a discussion about who came out on top in Tuesday’s presidential debate.
Turner, who has twice backed the presidential bids of independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, argued that Harris won the debate but also criticized the moderators for treating former President Donald Trump more harshly. According to her, they failed to press Harris on inconsistencies in her policy positions.
“On the fracking question, to the vice president — and this is me as a liberator — she, in 2019, when she was running [for the Democratic presidential nomination], she said ‘I’m done with fracking. We’re gonna do away with it,’” Turner stated in a clip posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“You can’t say you’re gonna do away with it. They had her dead to rights on that. What you can say, as a candidate, is that ‘I’m not in 2019. I’m not in 2020, and you know what? I changed my mind,'” Turner continued.
At this point, Phillip tried to step in to defend Harris.
“She reversed herself in 2020,” the host claimed.
Instantly, a chorus of voices objected.
“That’s not true!” a male voice shot back. “That’s a lie.”
“No, she didn’t, Abby. No way,” Jennings countered, shaking his head.
“It’s not true,” Turner reiterated.
The pivotal moment of the discussion starts around 1:20 in the video clip below.
Harris, notably, has made a “highly-choreographed” effort to distance herself from her earlier liberal stances.
Yet clips of her making those past statements have resurfaced on social media and in political ads.
“There is no question I’m in favor of banning fracking,” Harris clearly said in a campaign ad.
She made this statement back in 2019. However, the clip was featured in a July 2024 campaign ad supporting Dave McCormick, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.
Harris has largely avoided addressing the fracking topic, understanding its significance in Pennsylvania — a key swing state that ranked fifth in the country for fracking wells in 2020, according to WHTM-TV.
Naturally, Pennsylvania voters might want clarity on where Harris currently stands on fracking and why her stance has shifted.
True to form, Phillip attempted to defend the vice president. That kind of behavior has come to be expected from CNN.
Interestingly though, in recent weeks, the network has also displayed a newfound willingness to critique Harris’s previous radical positions and to question her campaign’s hesitance to engage with the media.
For that reason, it was refreshing to see the panel correct the host so swiftly. As Turner noted, the debate moderators should have pressed Harris more rigorously on the fracking issue, among other topics.
