President-elect Donald Trump showcased his negotiation skills on Monday morning during a significant announcement and an engaging Q&A session with reporters.
Speaking from Mar-a-Lago, the 47th president stood alongside SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son to reveal SoftBank’s commitment to investing $100 billion in the United States over the next four years.
Following the announcement, Trump fielded questions from reporters, addressing national security concerns with characteristic directness.
“Would you preemptively strike Iran’s nuclear facilities?” a reporter inquired.
Trump replied: “Am I gonna do preemptive strikes? Why would I say that? Can you imagine if I said ‘yes’ or ‘no?’ … Is that a serious question? How could I answer?”
When asked whether he would support Israel in such an action, Trump responded: “How could I tell you a thing like that now? You don’t talk about that before something may or may not happen. I don’t want to insult you, it’s just not something I would ever answer.”

Earlier during the event, Trump highlighted SoftBank’s $100 billion investment as a testament to the renewed confidence in the U.S. economy under his leadership. Masayoshi Son expressed optimism about the future of the U.S. economy, citing Trump’s presidency as a key factor.
Son stated, “My confidence level in the U.S. economy has tremendously increased with [Trump’s] victory,” adding, “Because of that, I am committing $100 billion and 100,000 jobs into the United States. This is double of last time… because President Trump is a double-down president.”
Trump called the investment evidence of “monumental confidence in America’s future” and encouraged Son to aim even higher, jokingly urging him to consider investing $200 billion instead. Son chuckled and agreed to try.
Trump praised Son as “one of the most accomplished business leaders of our time.”
Below is a transcript of the exchange between Son and Trump:
SON: “Thank you so much. I’m very, very excited. I would really like to celebrate the great victory of President Trump. And my confidence level in the economy of the United States has tremendously increased with his victory. So because of that, I’m now excited to commit this $100 billion and 100,000 jobs into the United States. This is double of last time, as President Trump said. Because I say, oh, President Trump is a double-down president. I’m going to have to double down, you know? $100 billion and 100,000 jobs. This is my confidence level, because that has doubled down. So I am truly excited to make this happen. And of course, business is important. Technology is important. But one more thing I’m really hoping is that this President Trump would make the world, bring the world into peace again. That’s my additional hope. And I think he will actually make it happen. So anyway, I’m excited to go. And we were discussing, and President Trump said, ‘Masa, double down is not enough. Maybe go for more.’ Right?”
Trump: “I’m going to ask him right now, would you make it $200 billion instead of $100 billion? (Laughter) He can actually — believe it or not, he can actually afford to do that. Would you do that?”
SON: “Well, my promise is 100, but he’s now asking to do more. I think, you know, with your leadership, my partnership with you, with your support, I will try to make it happen.”
Trump: “That’s great, thank you.”
SON: “All right.”
Trump: “Two hundred. He’ll make it happen. $200 billion investment. That’s great.”
SON: “He is a great negotiator.” (Laughter)
Trump: “He’s a brilliant guy and doing an unbelievable job. And the people of Japan and all over the world are very proud of him. Tremendous respect for himself. What he does, what he just did, and I would be surprised if it didn’t go to 200. When you say you’ll try, I know you’ll do it.”
SON: “I will really try. And I need your support, though.”
Trump: “You’ll have my support.”
SON: “All right.”
Trump: “You have our country’s support.”
SON: “Oh, fantastic.”
Trump: “Thank you, Masa, very much. I appreciate it.”
SON: “Thank you, thank you.”
Trump: “Do you want to say a word to the people of Japan who are all watching?”
SON: “Well, I’m sure our people in Japan are proud to make the partnership of the U.S. and Japan be stronger. And I’m very excited to make this happen. Thank you very much.”
