'What Did He Even Mean by This?': Tim Walz Sparks Outrage After Internet Hears What He Called Elon Musk
Tim Walz continues to ignite social media reactions — and not in a favorable way.
The Minnesota governor and Democratic vice presidential candidate has engaged in an indirect conflict with billionaire Elon Musk, largely due to Musk's support for former President Donald Trump. Recently, as Fox News reported, Walz essentially labeled Musk a “dips***.”
During a campaign event in Detroit on Friday, Walz triggered a fresh wave of online backlash when he seemed to imply Musk, a father of 12, is homosexual — and it was clear that Walz’s remark was intended to be disparaging.
Conservative commentator Ian Miles Cheong was one of the first to share the video clip.
“What did he even mean by this?” Cheong asked.
Walz, initially discussing economic issues, shifted to criticize tax cuts for wealthy individuals like Musk.
“If you’re a billionaire, Elon Musk for example, say, that gah … , that gay got …” he laughed.
“Michigan knows that word,” he added.
“Look, that dude got a tax cut and the rest of us got shafted on the whole deal,” he concluded.
(The complete video of the event can be seen here. Walz’s “gay guy” remarks occur around the 6:30 mark.)
It’s highly unlikely Walz set out with the intention of calling Musk “gay.” Based on his fragmented speech, it appears he meant to say “that guy got,” but it slipped out as “that gay go…”
Still, his snickering — followed by the “Michigan knows that word” comment directed at the crowd — suggests that after his initial error, Walz leaned into what was clearly meant as an insult. (To his credit, Walz did eventually replace “gay” with “dude.”)
Certainly, if Musk were gay, the world wouldn’t rely on Tim Walz to break the news. And chances are slim that he is.
Beyond his dozen children, Musk’s high-profile romantic life has often made international headlines (how many others have been linked to actress Amber Heard?), and any rumors of secret relationships would likely have surfaced long ago.
More crucially, it’s unlikely Musk himself would conceal anything of that nature — he has built his ventures, along with a bold public persona, by quite clearly not caring about public opinion.
What stands out most here is Walz — notorious for his clumsy speaking style and his own admission of being a “knucklehead” — appeared fully aware of his blunder in real-time.
Instead of taking responsibility and clarifying his slip immediately, he pressed on, with the maturity of a schoolboy amused by a crude word.
The resulting social media frenzy erupted, bringing far more insults for Walz than he could ever hurl at Musk.
Here’s a brief selection:
For Democrats, Walz’s recurring controversies — from “stolen valor” accusations and claims about his military service to questionable remarks about his own family, and his obvious struggle to campaign effectively — represent a perpetual headache for Kamala Harris’s campaign, a problem entirely of her own making.
It was Harris’s decision to select Walz as her running mate — bypassing Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Jew, likely to avoid alienating anti-Semites within her party.
It was also Harris who decided this man — with a peculiar obsession with the Chinese Communist Party — would be a viable choice to step into the Oval Office if she were unable to perform the duties of the presidency.
Voters casting their ballot for Kamala Harris for president may not fully realize it, but they’re effectively voting for Tim Walz as well.
This is a candidate who hasn’t made a sound decision since entering the spotlight as a vice-presidential contender.
He’s not likely to start anytime soon. And may the country never be in a situation where he holds any executive power at the White House.
