Where Is the Proof? McDonald's Finally Says Why Kamala Harris Can't Verify Working for Them

In an internal memo issued Sunday, McDonald's informed its employees that it cannot verify Vice President Kamala Harris’s past employment with the company due to incomplete employee records from that era.

This response comes after former President Donald Trump recently worked the takeout window and fryer at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s, quipping, “I’ve now worked here 15 minutes more than Kamala. She never worked here,” in a jab at the Vice President.

In August, The Washington Free Beacon reported it found no records, such as pay stubs, photos, or former coworkers, to confirm Harris’s claim of working at a McDonald's in Alameda, California, in the summer of 1983.

The outlet pointed out multiple reasons to question her claim. First, Harris had not mentioned her McDonald's stint until 2019, when she was campaigning for president and spoke at a labor rally in Las Vegas.

Second, details about her alleged work have shifted over time—from originally describing it as a way to help pay for law school, to more recently saying it was for “spending cash.”

Third, Harris’s January 2019 memoir, The Truths We Hold, does not mention her time at McDonald’s, despite dedicating a full chapter to issues facing the working class, as noted by the Free Beacon.

Fourth, she made no mention of it during her Democratic National Convention nomination speech in August, which was intended as a “reintroduction” of herself to Americans.

Fifth, the Free Beacon obtained a copy of a 1987 job application Harris completed for a legal clerk role in Alameda County, California, which required her to list “every position” held over the previous decade.

“Politicians who worked menial food service jobs as teens are often quick to mention it as proof of their working class bona fides. Future president Barack Obama, during his 2008 campaign, said his first job scooping ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins in Honolulu instilled in him the virtues of responsibility and hard work,” The Free Beacon noted.

Additionally, with one in eight Americans having worked at McDonald’s, Harris would have had ample reason to bring up her experience when running for earlier offices like California attorney general or U.S. senator to connect with voters.

In its memo to employees, McDonald's wrote, “Though we’re not a political brand, we’ve been proud to hear of former President Trump’s love of McDonald’s and Vice President Harris’s fond memories of working under the Arches.”

The company continued, “While we and our franchises don’t have records for all positions dating back to the early ’80s, what makes ‘1 in 8’ so powerful is the shared experience so many Americans have had.”

McDonald’s concluded, “We open our doors to everyone” and noted that “franchisees have invited Vice President Harris and Governor [Tim] Walz to their restaurants.”
